No supplement, diet or lifestyle modification — aside from social distancing and practicing proper hygiene — can protect you from developing COVID-19. The strategies outlined within may boost your immune health, but they don’t protect specifically against COVID-19. If you want to boost your immune health, you may wonder how to help your body fight off illnesses. While bolstering your immunity is easier said than done, several dietary and lifestyle changes may strengthen your body’s natural defenses and help you fight harmful pathogens, or disease-causing organisms.

Tips for Entering Cold & Flu Season with a Healthier Immune System

The human immune system is a complex network of cells, tissues and organs that works constantly to help the body fight infection and disease. It’s what keeps us healthy by warding off harmful bacteria and viruses that can invade our bodies and make us ill. A healthy immune system functions like an army within the body to prevent a hostile takeover of healthy cells and tissues by disease-causing pathogens.

Developing a strong immune system takes a healthy diet and exercise, along with exposure to illness-causing pathogens in order to build a defense against them. As we grow and our immune system develops, exposure to microbes (microscopic organisms like bacteria, fungi and viruses) helps it recognize disease-causing germs and viruses that need to be removed.

A healthy immune system is important year-round, but especially as we enter the cold and flu season during a pandemic. While there is no surefire way to prevent contracting any illness, there are ways to bolster your immune system functions to help reduce or avoid the symptoms they cause.

Practice Good Hygiene

We’ve heard this advice a lot in recent months, but it bears repeating: Practice frequent handwashing and avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Avoid shaking hands, especially during the fall and winter months when cold and flu season starts. Social distancing is still recommended and will help prevent the transmission of germs and viruses, no matter the type.


An essential mineral, zinc can be found in many foods including meat, shellfish, chicken, fortified cereals, beans, nuts and seeds. Zinc promotes the production and maturation of white blood cells, which are key players in a healthy immune system. It’s a known defense against colds and can reduce severity and length if taken early once symptoms present. Lack of zinc is also a risk factor in the development of pneumonia. According to a recent article in Medical News Today, zinc may provide extra protective effects against Covid-19 by reducing inflammation and boosting anti-viral immunity. Scientists have known for decades that zinc can block the replication of rhinoviruses responsible for respiratory infections in people, but there is still not enough evidence to make recommendations about zinc intake and COVID-19.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C carries powerful antioxidant properties that can help decrease inflammation, in turn lending support to immune function. Good sources of vitamin C include citrus fruit and juices, green and red bell peppers, strawberries, raspberries, kiwi, pineapple and watermelon. Contrary to popular belief, vitamin C is not likely to help prevent you from getting a cold but can reduce the duration and symptoms with regular intake.

Rest More, Stress Less

Getting enough shuteye is a well-known way to improve your immune system. People who don’t get enough sleep each night are more likely to suffer from colds, viruses and increased inflammation. While asleep our immune system releases proteins called cytokines, some of which are necessary in increased levels during infection, inflammation or times of high stress. Sleep deprivation prevents the increase of important infection-fighting antibodies and cells as well, leading to a weakened immune system.

Stress levels can be compounded by lack of sleep too, so it’s important to find ways of reducing stress before it becomes problematic. Long-term stress can cause inflammation, imbalanced immune cell function, high blood pressure and more undesired side effects. Along with getting a good night’s rest, be sure to manage stress levels with regular exercise, meditation and self-care practices that can buoy your mood.

Eat Right

The kind of food we eat are directly correlated to overall health, so a healthy diet is imperative to a strong immune system. Ensure a steady diet of fruits, veggies, proteins, grains and healthy fats like those found in olive oil and salmon. Probiotics help your digestive system by producing ‘good’ bacteria that helps maintain digestive health. Research has shown there may be immune system benefits as well by inhibiting the growth of harmful gut bacteria.

Eliminate Bad Habits

Smoking and excessive alcohol intake also take a serious toll on immune system health. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), smoking compromises the equilibrium of the immune system and can make it less successful at fighting disease. Nicotine also increases cortisol levels while reducing important antibody formation and T-cell response.

Alcohol can have adverse effects throughout the entire body, including weakening the immune system. High alcohol intake makes it harder for your body to ward off harmful pathogens as it prioritizes breaking down alcohol over other critical functions. It also affects sleep patterns, further compromising your immune system’s ability to fire on all cylinders. Limiting alcohol or omitting it entirely for a time will allow your immune system to work on fighting other battles you can’t always control.
